The Untitled in Between Art and People
—— By Chai Zhongjian
Seeing Wang He's artworks involves a kind of further looking-through her illustrations, poetries and
her manners that refused to grow up. Just like this exhibition titled "Hug" thoughimages are tangibly
presented, no proper names could be found. This is a portrait of a group of untitled people. When you
get access to artist Wang He through her artworks, it seems that an unknown identity was also hidden
within her.
There are many ways to crack the unknown, which are all in the perception of artists, interpreters
and readers. Certainly, the unknown far beyond another is the very root of the unknown, thus, we can
do nothing but to mark the unknown territory according to another. Most importantly, who can originally
survive in the world of unknown, facing up with unknown terriorities all the time? The status of this kind
of unknown has generated the unknown quality and unknown quantity. Wang He's artwork just
originates from this unknown place. However, the situation of unknown is quite broad-apart from
mystery, concealment and infinity, it includes profound meaning, myth, spirituality, deriving into
iconoclast, ghost and holiness, imcomprehensible and insane. The unknown is always followed up by
activities of knowledge and understandings. What people have been offered by contemporary scenario
seemed not forthe objective unknown hidden behind of matters but for sort of things beyond
comprehension or certain set-up for imcomprehensibility. Namely, the unknow situation is not only
legacies rendered by nature but also creativities developed by human beings. If the feature of Wang
He‘s unknown belongs to the offering from nature, her paintings are creative unfolding of theunknown.
This is a paradox as the development of human knowledge is not in a way that knowledge
eliminates unknown, rather, knowledge always associates with unknown and ignorance. It is precisely
because of the knowledge, the unlimited unknown could be manifested. This group ofartworks by Wang
He were started from the manual and material labors: through reproduction,cotton-knitted materials
presented a group of shape of untitled people who are from the eccentric world; or seems like
reapperaed lines of cotton thread re-scultpting these untitled portraits on papers; she then placed these
people on the spinner of mirror, spinning and spinning. The world of known and unknown leaves us a
space for doubting in Wang He's unknown fantasies - you, he, I, they and the untitled people are always
among us.
