观夏俭宁的作品,看他风格独特的画面,犹如感受某种精微俭藏的图像,沉稳、俭易,像是从经典类艺术中变幻而来的把式——温良恭俭地反思当代艺术的喧嚣,复归宁静,回到真实的内心和手艺。

夏俭宁的独特性在于:他本然地面对“艺术”和“技术”以功课,由此练就自身在不同方面所应具有的“技艺”——这是一个多么古老而实在的话题啊!但确如展览的标题“动态的自然观”所力图阐发的艺术在本源处所应立足的踏实的所在。

艺术家的作品源于“艺术”境界的高下与“技术”能力的深浅,这些在夏俭宁这里更具体的体现在情感的深度和劳作的韧性上。在他心灵的底板上,“艺术”是隐涵在主观性里所凝聚的情感色调,俭约达意的图像构成随情触发。犹如他切身感受并理解的情感事件,率真的体现在他的《情俭系列》油画作品中——极简、动感的大尺度构图,契合着艺术家隐秘的“情势”与“情态”的内在心性。凸显的黑色与渐变的明度色,流露出艺术家的纯情浪漫,画面风格的统一性,即是单幅创作,亦可组合成两联、三联的图像,仿佛他的心灵世界和理想国的景色。

在他精心构思并辛勤劳作的“凸塑·线迹”构成的《微观系列》作品中,“技术”和坚韧的耐力让人阅读到他手艺的精湛,看到艺术作品微观细密的韵味,给人“物有所值、技艺超值”的品质感受力。

夏俭宁的艺术给我们带来奇异的阅读方式:远观/近观/细看/放大镜看/正面/侧面的看,同一件作品在多样的空间视角下会有不同的视觉可感性。这些效果正出于他创作的“两步法”:第一步,是在二维平面上凸塑出造型各异、大小对比、疏密相间的堆积体态。这些体态让我联想到辽阔大地上的千高原隐喻,或者水平面上激流涌动的波峰与海浪、天空中悬挂的白云朵朵……在平面上塑形可以符合精微计算的抽象原理,更可以在自然的原始性中展开万物形态的类比。但聚集到作品上,重要的是考验艺术家的创造力给观者带来的视觉可体验的丰富度是怎样的?夏俭宁对此是下了一番功夫的。第二步如吐丝般的线迹织网,给所有的凸起物罩上一层灰色的格调。远观如白色的底板上深浅渐变的灰色漂浮物,甚至像隐约可见的抽象素描画;近看似每个山丘或小岛的姿态,那些变换的线迹,游艺出无法确定的自然肌理的交织……《动态的自然观》夏俭宁个展——给出创作与阅读的双重自然观照,展现出当代艺术的当下性中平易近人的体验方式。

Dynamic View of Nature: Xia Jianning Solo Show

Watching Xia Jianning’s works and looking at his uniquely styled pictures, it is like feeling some subtle and frugal images, calm and steady, simple and easy, just as a handle style that has changed irregularly from classic art --- gentle and kindhearted, courteous and moderate reflection on the noisy of contemporary art, the return to tranquility, the return to the true heart and craftsmanship.

The uniqueness of Xia Jianning lies in the fact that he originally faces "art" and "technology" with his hardwork, and from this he practices his own "skills" in different aspects --- what an ancient and real topic this is!  However, as the title of the exhibition, "Dynamic View of Nature", which strives to illustrate that the art should be firmly established at its origin.

is the emotional tone concealed and condensed in the subjectivity, and the image composition of frugality and expressiveness is triggered by emotion.  As if the emotional events he personally felt and understood, they are frankly reflected in his "Emotion and Thrift Series" oil paintings --- the minimalist and dynamic large-scale composition, which accords with the artist's hidden inner mind of "emotional trend" and "spiritual mood". The prominent black and gradual changing lightness and color reveal the artist's innocence and romance, and the unity of the style of the picture, that is, a single piece of creation, which can also be combined into couplet or triptych images, as if his spiritual world and the scenery of an ideal country.

The artist's work stems from the superiority of the "art" state and the depth of the "technical" ability, which are more concretely reflected by Xia Jianning in the depth of emotion and the toughness of work.  On the floor of his mind, "art" In the "Microcosmic Series" works composed by his carefully conceived and hard-working "convex mould·stitch", from the "technique" and the tenacious endurance one can read his exquisite craftsmanship, realize the microscopic and delicate lingering charm of the art works, and experience the quality perception of "good value for market, superior value in skills".

Xia Jianning's art brings us a strange way of reading: from a distance, a close-up, a detail and a magnifying glass to watch the front and the side, the same work will have different visual sensibility under a variety of spatial perspectives.  These effects are due to the "two-step method" he created: the first step is to protrude on a two-dimensional plane the accumulation of different shapes, contrasting sizes, and well spaced density.  These postures remind me of the metaphor of a thousand plateaus on the vast land, or the turbulent crests and waves on the horizontal surface, the white clouds hanging in the sky... Shaping on a flat surface can conform to the abstraction principle of subtle computing, and can also be used in the analogy of all forms in the primitiveness of nature.  But when gathered in the work, the important thing is to test how could be the richness of the visual experience that the artist’s creativity brings to the viewer?  Xia Jianning works hard on this.  The second step is to weave the net with silk-like stitches, and cover all the protrusions with a gray style.  From a distance, it looks like gray floating objects with color gradual gradients on a white bottom plate, or even faintly visible abstract sketches; from a close view, it looks like the posture of each hill or island, the changing lines are entertaining an indeterminate natural texture interweaving... "Dynamic View of Nature" Xia Jianning's solo exhibition --- gives a dual natural view of creation and reading, showing the approachable experience mode of contemporary art.
