《痴迷:弗朗斯西∙培根》展览概述

在美术史上几乎家喻户晓的殿堂级艺术大师弗朗西斯·培根(Francis Bacon),是20世纪最杰出的艺术家之一。培根1909年10月28日出生于爱尔兰,1929年定居伦敦。1927年,在巴黎生活期间观看了毕加索的展览,让培根萌生了从事绘画的想法,然而他没有接受美术教育。1943-1945年开始绘画,并且伴随生活的积累产生了自己独特的绘画主题。培根出道即成名。他两次在伦敦泰特美术馆做大型回顾展(1962年,以及1985年);纽约古根海姆美术馆回顾展(1963年);巴黎大皇宫举办重要回顾展(1971年);纽约大都会博物馆举办大型展览(1975年);1954年代表英国参加了第27届威尼斯双年展。1976-1977年,培根结识了克里斯提亚诺·洛瓦特里·拉瓦里诺(Cristiano Lovatelli Ravarino )。1992年4月28日逝世于西班牙马德里。

 

培根作品从他1992年去世之后到现在,一直是艺术市场的宠儿,在各种重要的艺术品交易场景——尤其是重要的拍卖过程中由于金额的快速飙升和巨大,被称之为西方战后最贵的艺术家而震惊全世界。同时全球重要的美术馆均有弗朗西斯·培根作品的收藏,他席卷了美术史。

 

在艺术厦门美术馆举办的《痴迷:弗朗西斯·培根》展览,展出的是培根鲜为人知的纸面油画棒绘画拼贴作品(Art Works on Paper)系列(共35件)。这批杰作大部分绘制于他的晚年,1987年至1990年之间意大利的威尼斯、博洛尼亚等地,有文献记载,也有少部分完成于伦敦的工作室。并赠与克里斯提亚诺·洛瓦特里·拉瓦里诺(Cristiano Lovatelli Ravarino )的弗朗西斯·培根收藏基金会 。这批作品回溯着他较早时期作品的重要主题。如:重复对委拉斯凯兹的肖像画《教皇英诺森十世》持续创作;耶稣受难;以及大量的肖像画作。

 

据培根最重要的艺评人,艺术史家,培根的“圈内人”爱德华∙露西·史密斯撰文:“培根发现他的盛名让他难以负荷。他的解决办法就是逃避至鲜为人知或无人认识他的地方。弗朗西斯·培根开始定期去意大利旅行,那里的一切都很平静,他远离密切注视他的人群。经常陪伴他到意大利冒险的是同伴克里斯提亚诺·洛瓦特里·拉瓦里诺(Cristiano Lovatelli Ravarino ),他是美意混血的年轻俊男。他们经常出没于威尼斯的酒吧、餐馆。然后,他会热切地致力于绘画,以及创作拼贴画和混合媒体,离开工作室,便换成轻便可以随身携带的材料,持续的创作。在他的生命末期,他尤其想尝试新的媒材……”,这批纸面油画棒拼贴作品就是这样的背景。

 

由于年轻美貌伴侣的陪伴,培根所画的新材料完整的作品,让人联想到年迈的米开朗基罗,为年轻的托马索∙卡瓦列里(Tommaso Cavallieri)所画的素描。惊心动魄的美术史深处,大师们的经历有如轮回那样的相似,说明着艺术赋情的先验感。

 

此次在厦门的展览也是培根原作在中国大陆的首展,对培根的艺术感受和理解有着特殊的重要性,它们会为年轻艺术家开辟新的道路。它们不仅在质量和技术上很重要,而且因为它们是在弗朗西斯·培根艺术活动的最后阶段产生的。他在一次反思的最后画出了它们,触及了他一生中创作的所有艺术品。其显著的特征就是,他概括了早年50年代创作中的重要主题,如临摹委拉斯开兹教皇肖像画,以及商人的肖像画,甚至延续至一系列神职人员的肖像画,或许,灵感来自于他在意大利街头看到的人物景象吧。

 

意大利知名策展人桑德罗∙奥兰迪关于培根的全景式介绍长文,称 “培根的肖像画在抚摸人类”。这些集中的小幅头像,内部一样有自己的灵魂,“表达着淋漓尽致的人类美(培根自己的话)”。头像沾满整个画面,并不需要更大的纸张展示多余的空白,因为被他抚摸过的威尼斯面孔在图像志中已经永生,因为,80年代末期,培根在鲍德里亚海湾消闲的日子里重画以往的题材,的确回到了“最基本的状态”。这些肖像不仅仅连续的外形,也是重叠的,并不同于我们生活中常见的那种形式。画面由于冒险而从不会沦落为一种装饰。

弗朗西斯∙培根意大利素描基金会(The Francis Bacon Foundation of the drawings)董事长,意大利著名律师,翁贝托·盖里尼(Umberto Guerini),作为培根纸上作品专门的遗产管理人和策展人,为这批作品的物理学、笔迹学的鉴定、保护、全球展览做出了杰出的贡献。画作的拥有者,培根的非正式情人克里斯提亚诺·洛瓦特里·拉瓦里诺(Cristiano Lovatelli Ravarino )写到:“他把痛苦变成让我们所有人感到甜蜜的东西”。其实,自从1992年以后,培根的朋友已经陆续透漏培根有一大堆迷人的纸上作品。他艺评人马丁·哈默(Martin Hammer)也说:“未来,培根有可能和今天留给我们的印象不一样”。我们以往所知、所看到的培根,仅仅是培根大规模爱的冰山一角,因此,我们为遇见培根的Artworks on paper而狂喜。

Francis Bacon, an almost household name in the history of fine arts, is one of the most outstanding artists in the 20th century. Bacon was born in Ireland on October 28, 1909 and settled in London in 1929. In 1927, while living in Paris, he watched Picasso's exhibition, which gave Bacon the idea of painting. However, he did not receive art education. From 1943 to 1945, he began painting, and along with the accumulation of life, he produced his own unique painting theme. Bacon became famous when he came out. He held two large-scale retrospective exhibitions in the Tate Gallery in London (1962, 1985); the Guggenheim Gallery in New York (1963); the Grand Palace in Paris (1971); the Metropolitan Museum in New York (1975); and Britain participated in the 27th Venice Biennale in 1954. In 1976-1977, bacon met Cristiano Lovatelli Ravarino. He died in Madrid, Spain on April 28, 1992.

 

Bacon's works have been the favorite of the art market since his death in 1992. In all kinds of important art trading scenes, especially in the important auction process, Bacon's works are known as the most expensive artists in the west after the war because of the rapid rise and huge amount of money. At the same time, the world's major art museums have collections of Francis Bacon's works, he swept the history of art.

 

The exhibition "obsession: Francis Bacon" held in Art  Amoy Museum(Xiamen) shows Bacon's little-known series of art works on paper (35 pieces in total). Most of these masterpieces were painted in his later years, from 1987 to 1990 in Venice, Bologna and other places in Italy. There are records in literature, and a few of them were completed in his studio in London. And to Cristiano Lovatelli Ravarino's Francis Bacon collection foundation. These works trace back to the important themes of his earlier works. For example: repeated creation of Velazquez's portrait "Pope Innocent X"; the crucifixion of Jesus; and a large number of portraits.

 

According to Edward Lucie-Smith, Bacon's most important art critic, art historian and "insider", bacon found that his fame was too much for him to bear. His solution is to escape to a place where few people or no one knows him. Francis Bacon began to travel regularly to Italy, where everything was quiet and he was far away from the people who watched him closely. He was often accompanied by his companion Cristiano Lovatelli Ravarino, a handsome young man of mixed race. They often haunt the bars and restaurants in Venice. After that, he will devote himself to painting and creating collages and mixed media. After leaving the studio, he will replace them with portable materials for continuous creation. At the end of his life, he especially wants to try new media... " This group of oil painting stick collages is such a background.

 

Accompanied by his beautiful young partner, Bacon's complete works with new materials are reminiscent of Michelangelo's sketches for young Tommaso Cavallieri. In the heart stirring depth of art history, the experience of masters is similar to samsara, which shows the transcendental sense of art emotion.

 

The exhibition in Xiamen is also the first exhibition of Bacon's original work in Chinese mainland. It has special importance for Bacon's artistic feelings and understanding. They will open up new paths for young artists. They are important not only in quality and technology, but also because they came into being in the final stages of Francis Bacon's artistic activities. He drew them at the end of a reflection, touching all the works of art he had created in his life. His remarkable feature is that he summarized the important themes in his early creation in the 1950s, such as copying the portraits of Pope Velazquez, businessmen, and even a series of portraits of clergy. Perhaps his inspiration came from the images of figures he saw on the streets of Italy.

 

Sandro Orlandi, a famous Italian curator, wrote a long panoramic introduction to Bacon, saying that "Bacon's portrait is touching human beings". The small head portraits in these collections have their own soul inside, "expressing the most incisive human beauty (Bacon's own words)". The portrait is full of the whole picture, and there is no need for larger paper to show redundant blank space, because the Venetian face he touched has been immortal in the image chronicle, because in the late 1980s, bacon redraws the past theme in his leisure time in the bay of Baudrillard, and it really returns to the "most basic state". These portraits are not only continuous in appearance, but also overlapping, and different from the common forms in our lives. The picture will never be reduced to a kind of decoration because of adventure.

 

Bacon's series of oil painting collages on paper is a brand new ecstasy: bright colors, free lines, showing the power of obsession and the essence of art. Therefore, Edward Lucie Smith said in the depth of Art History: "these works have a fascinating level, that is, they make bacon look like the myth of Laocoon, just like Laocoon to break away from the python around him, he tries to get rid of the false myth about him, and return to the joy of artistic creation—— Just for that reason. “

 

Umberto Guerini, chairman of the Francis Bacon foundation of the drawings, is a famous Italian lawyer. As the special heritage administrator and curator of Bacon's paper works, he has made outstanding contributions to the identification, protection and global exhibition of physics and handwriting of these works. Cristiano Lovatelli Ravarino, the owner of the painting and Bacon's unofficial lover, wrote: "he turns pain into something sweet for all of us.". In fact, since 1992, Bacon's friends have revealed that Bacon has a lot of fascinating works on paper. Martin hammer, his art critic, also said: "in the future, bacon may leave us a different impression than today.". Bacon, as we have known and seen before, is only the tip of the iceberg of Bacon's large-scale love. Therefore, we are ecstatic to meet Bacon's works on paper.
